Privacy Policy
Last updated 4 June 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how BusGenie (busgenie.co.uk) handles information when you use the site. BusGenie is owned and operated by A3YD Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 17245060, with its registered office at 71–75 Shelton Street, London, WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom ("we", "us", "our"). A3YD Ltd is the data controller for personal data processed through this site.
Our approach
BusGenie is a public transit discovery service. You can browse timetables, stops, routes, operators, and live bus positions without creating an account or giving us your name, email address, or payment details. We do not run advertising, and we do not use third-party analytics or tracking cookies.
Information we collect
- Approximate location from your IP address. To show buses and stops near a relevant area on first load, we estimate your approximate area (such as a town or city) from your IP address using a local MaxMind GeoIP database held on our own server. This estimate is approximate, is not stored against any profile, and is not shared with third parties.
- Precise location (only when you ask). If you choose a location feature — for example "Find nearby stops" — your browser asks your permission to share your precise location. We use that location only to find nearby stops and services for that request. We do not store your precise location on our servers.
- Preferences in your browser. Some settings, such as your map colour preference and a saved approximate area, are stored locally in your browser (using local storage). This information stays on your device and is not transmitted to us.
- Technical server logs. Like most websites, our servers keep standard logs that may include your IP address, browser type and user agent, the pages you request, and timestamps. We use these logs to operate the service, keep it secure, diagnose problems, and prevent abuse.
How we use information
- To provide and improve the BusGenie service and its features.
- To show relevant nearby stops, routes, and live bus information.
- To keep the service secure, available, and free from abuse.
- To comply with our legal obligations.
Our lawful bases for processing under UK data protection law are our legitimate interests in operating and securing the service, your consent (for precise browser location), and compliance with legal obligations.
Cookies, local storage, and tracking
BusGenie does not use cookies, and we do not use advertising, third-party analytics, or tracking technologies of any kind. The only information we store on your device is the browser local storage described above (a map colour preference and a saved approximate area); it stays on your device and is never sent to us.
Third-party data and services
The timetable, stop, route, and live vehicle data shown on BusGenie comes from public sources including the Bus Open Data Service (BODS), the Traveline National Dataset (TNDS), and the Transport for London (TfL) Unified API, with stop and place data published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. We fetch this data from our own servers, so those providers do not receive your IP address.
Map tiles, by contrast, are loaded directly by your browser from third-party map providers — OpenStreetMap and CARTO. When your browser requests map tiles, those providers receive your IP address and handle it under their own privacy policies.
Sharing your information
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your personal data with third parties except where necessary to operate the service (for example, our hosting and infrastructure providers acting on our behalf) or where required by law.
Data retention
We keep technical server logs only for as long as needed to operate and secure the service, after which they are deleted or anonymised. Preferences stored in your browser remain until you clear them.
International transfers
Our servers are hosted within the European Economic Area. Some third-party providers we rely on (for example, the map tile providers above) may process data outside the UK and EEA. Where personal data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards recognised under UK data protection law.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have rights over your personal data, including the rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, or object to our processing, and the right to data portability where applicable. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details below. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
Children
BusGenie is a general-audience travel information service and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will revise the "Last updated" date above when we do. Significant changes will be reflected on this page.
